Hannah Lee Miller

In the run up to the Catford Comic and Zine fair we’re asking participants a series mildly interesting questions. First up is the ever brilliant artist and cat observer Hannah Lee Miller. (No relation)

CCZF: Hi Hannah, apart from answering this email what are you doing right now?
HLM: Apart from this I am recovering from going to my companies storage and searching archives, dusty and achy.
CCZF: Blimey! How long have you been doing comics and art and stuff?
HLM: I have been drawing since I was a kid and watching my Dad over his shoulder. I made my first comic strips  around 19.
CCZF: In order of preference, what are your three favourite soups? We are compiling a chart.
HLM: As a matter of point I feel it should be said that Soup is not a food, it is a savoury drink much like tea but in a bowl, needless to say… 1. Tomato. 2. Butternut Squash 3. Sausage stew.

CCZF: Nice selection. It’s early days but tomato is taking the top spot at our first attempt. Sausage Stew though …

What are you reading and listening to at the moment?
HLM: Listening: Tribe Called Quest- We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, the fault of Matt Boyce playing it at the Gypsy Hill Comic fair.
Reading: Phillip Pullmans- ‘The Amber Spyglass’ and also Tillie Walden’s ‘Spinning though to be fair, I am forever reading 10 books at the same time and never finishing any (except comics, I always read and finish all the comics all the time)
CCZF: How is your cat Treacle doing?
HLM: My black cat Treacle is gorgeous equally as gorgeous as his sister who has taken to sleeping in the crock of my armpit in a little ball of adorable fur.

CCZF. What’s your favourite cartoon at the moment?
HLM. If you mean favourite kids TV cartoon I would say Battle of the Planets.
If you mean comic book I think Short Box are awesome. You pay a fee and they send you a bunch of really good self published comics and a print, check them out!
CCZF. We like Patrick Mchale’s Over the garden wall. A work of genius. The Boy Stan and I hoping they make a new one.
I loved Battle of the Planets. Great too theme tune too. The baddie in the purple pointy hood really gave me the willies though. Zoltar. I had a dream he burnt our house down.
CCZF. However, If you had to recommend a comic/graphic novel/zine for a 11 year old what would it be?
HLM. I love Craig Thompson’s Space Dumplins it’s soooooo freaking good and all ages friendly.
CCZF. That is a very cool book. What are you working on at the moment?
HLM.  I am trying to embrace my documentary pull in story telling and my love of poetry/prose so I’m trying to write, desperately trying to write. I wanna make a substantial documentary comic so I am feeding the idea.
CCZF. Like if Louie Theroux made a comic? He was born born in Catford by the way. Looking forward to that Hanna. What advice would you give to somebody starting out in comics?
HLM. This is my advice to all creatives. Do it badly, f**k it up, embrace getting it wrong, as long as you keep doing it.
CCZF. Good advice. Do you know how to get to the Blythe Hill Tavern?
HLM. I have google, it tells me everything.
CCZF. Amazing. Thanks for that Hannah.
HLM. Extra Fact The Thinking emoji is my favourite emoji.🤔
CCZF. That was just too much information Hannah. You’ve absolutely ruined it now. See you on the 10th!
